You ever pray and think, “Okay God, I’m listening…” and then immediately hear nothing?
Yeah. Me too.
And if I’m honest, sometimes I don’t want to hear what I think He might be saying. Like when I sensed God nudging me to do a fast recently. My immediate reaction?
“But I don’t want to.”
I KNOW how fasting will bless me (physically, spiritually, and mentally). I literally write a book about it.
I’ve done fasts before, and I know how powerful they can be. But this time? I didn’t want to do it. It sounded hard.
I like food. I’ve also been doing clean keto for almost a year now, cutting sugar and carbs and doing all the things. And still—my health and weight have been slow to respond. It’s been frustrating.
So when both my doctor and the Holy Spirit started nudging me toward fasting, you’d think I’d be like, “Yes, Lord!”
Instead, I went straight into overthinking mode.
Why? Because even though I want to hear from God… I don’t always want to obey when what He says feels inconvenient or hard. And that, my friend, is the real issue.
We say we want to hear God’s voice. But do we really want to listen—especially when it’s hard?
Prefer to listen? Learn more about How to Hear from God here:
Let’s be real: the world is loud. Like, really loud. Notifications, text messages, cultural noise, to-do lists that never end… it’s no wonder our spiritual ears are clogged.
But here’s what Scripture says:
“You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart.” — Jeremiah 29:13
That doesn’t sound like a casual scroll-through-prayers kind of seeking. It sounds intentional. Focused. Desperate, even.
It sounds like it might even include fasting.
Fasting isn’t about earning answers from God or making Him move. It’s about silencing the noise—externally and internally—so we can tune in to the One who’s always speaking. It’s about aligning our will and our hearts with His. It’s taking away what we’re going to for comfort instead of Him. It’s removing what may be blocking us from hearing His voice.
I hear this a lot: “I’m asking God for answers, but all I get is silence.”
First—same. I’ve been there.
But I’ve also learned that God’s silence doesn’t always mean absence. Sometimes He’s already spoken, and we just haven’t obeyed. Other times, He’s drawing us deeper, inviting us to get still enough to truly hear. And to trust Him.
And sometimes? We’ve filled our lives with so much noise—overthinking, distractions, mental clutter—that we couldn’t hear Him if He was yelling. But God won’t compete with the noise.
Hearing God isn’t about getting the perfect formula. It’s about sitting in His presence and surrendering.
Here’s what that looks like for me:
Friend, the truth is: God wants to be heard. He’s not playing hide-and-seek with you.
But He also speaks in a still, small voice.
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” — John 10:27
Hearing Him takes time. Trust. Practice. Stillness.
And yeah… sometimes fasting.
If your life has been feeling loud and spiritually dry, I want to invite you to go deeper. Start with five minutes of quiet today. Ask God to speak—and then really listen. Open your Bible. Write down what comes. It doesn’t have to be perfect.
Just show up.
I go deeper into this in my latest podcast episode, including some real-life stories and practical steps you can start today. You can listen here:
How to Hear God (Even When the World Is Noisy)
You were created to hear Him. Let’s make space to listen.
Let’s get real. There are things that can block us from hearing Him clearly:
You’ve probably heard it: “The teacher stays silent during the test.” Sometimes the reason God is silent is because we’re just in a season where He’s asking, “Do you trust Me?”
As a Christian life coach, I help people find clarity in life’s chaos. We use spiritual practices to deepen your connection with God. This includes inviting in the Holy Spirit, prayer, Scripture, and reflection.
Feeling overwhelmed is normal. But, I suggest trying practices like mindfulness and journaling. These can clear your mind and help you focus on God’s guidance. You can also get a copy of my Stop Overthinking, Worrying, and Negative Thinking Guide.
Renewing your mind means changing your thoughts with Scripture. Meditating on God’s Word and affirming your identity in Christ helps. This makes it easier to hear God’s voice.
Taking thoughts captive means checking if they match God’s truth. I recommend praying for discernment and challenging negative thoughts. Replace them with biblical affirmations.
Yes! Being part of a faith community can help. Talking, praying, and sharing insights with others can affirm your feelings. It leads to clearer spiritual understanding.
Silence is part of spiritual growth. Focus on reflection, prayer, and self-examination during these times. It’s not God’s absence but a chance to deepen your faith, trust God, and strengthen your character.
Begin by dedicating time for stillness and prayer each day. Engage with Scripture and keep a journal. This habit helps you seek God’s guidance and recognize His voice.
