A Christian Life Coach’s Guide to Staying In the Moment
Do you ever feel overwhelmed by thoughts of the future or weighed down by past regrets? As a Christian Life Coach, I see this struggle often. Learning how to stay present is not only vital for your mental well-being but also crucial for your walk with God. When we’re not living in the moment, we miss out on the peace, clarity, and direction God has for us right now.
In this blog, I’ll explore practical strategies, rooted in biblical truth, that can help you stay focused on the present while balancing your past and future. If you’d rather listen, jump over to the podcast to listen to this episode on How to Stay Present.
Why Staying Present Matters
We all have moments where our minds drift from the here and now. We either dwell on past mistakes or stress about the future. But Jesus instructs us in Matthew 6:34: “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Matthew 6:34, NIV)
Staying present helps us let go of those burdens and focus on today, trusting God’s provision for the moment.
How to Stay Present: Practical Tools for Daily Life
1. Begin with Gratitude
Starting your day with gratitude can shift your focus from anxiety to the present moment. Philippians 4:6 encourages us to replace worry with thanksgiving. Throughout the day, if you find your mind wandering, pause and identify something in your surroundings to be thankful for—whether it’s the smell of fresh coffee, the warmth of the sun, or the sound of birds.
2. Practice Single-Tasking
In a world full of distractions, giving your full attention to one task at a time—whether you’re working, praying, or eating—can help you stay grounded in the moment. This mindfulness technique, known as single-tasking, allows you to quiet the mental noise and be fully present.
3. Morning Journaling
Set aside a few minutes each morning to journal your intentions for the day. Writing down your thoughts can help clarify your focus and keep you on track. If you feel distracted, revisit your journal as a guide to realign your priorities.
4. Engage in Mindful Breathing
When stress arises, take deep breaths, focusing on the sensation of air filling your lungs. As you breathe out, invite God into that moment with a prayer: “Holy Spirit, meet me here.” This simple practice can calm your mind and help you refocus.
5. Spend Time in Nature
God’s creation has a way of drawing us back into the present. Take time to walk outdoors, feel the breeze, and listen to the sounds of nature. These small moments of connection remind us of God’s presence and help us reconnect with ourselves and our surroundings.
How to Stay Present While Planning for the Future
It’s important to remember that while God calls us to live in the moment, He also encourages us to plan for the future. Proverbs 29:18 says: “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” (Proverbs 29:18, KJV)
The key is balance. While it’s essential to have a vision, it’s equally important to trust God with each step, knowing He will reveal the future in His timing. Focus on what God is asking you to do today.
Tools to Strengthen Present Moment Awareness
Body Scanning: This is a mindfulness technique where you focus on each part of your body, starting from your feet and working your way up, feeling God’s peace settle into each part as you go.
Visualization: Before you start your day, visualize what the success of staying present looks like. What does a peaceful, present-focused day look like for you?
Daily Review: At the end of each day, reflect on what worked well and what didn’t. Were there moments where you felt overwhelmed or disconnected? How can you make tomorrow even better?
Worship and Meditation: Use worship music or scripture meditation to anchor yourself in the present. Psalm 46:10 says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God.’ There is power in stillness.”
Stay Present with God’s Word
God’s Word is one of the most powerful tools for staying present. Psalm 46:10 reminds us: “Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10, NIV)
By meditating on scripture, we not only refocus our minds but also draw closer to God, experiencing His presence in our daily lives.
