Learning how to self-regulate your nervous system is one of the most important—and most overlooked—keys to healing, especially for Christian women who feel stuck, overwhelmed, or like they’re constantly overthinking everything. If you’ve been crying out to God for breakthrough but still feel reactive, exhausted, or disconnected, this post will help you understand why—and what to do about it from a biblical perspective.
Have you ever thought, “Why am I always on edge? Why do I overthink everything? Why do I feel so stuck—even when I’m praying, trying, and doing all the right things?”
You’re not the only one.
I hear it all the time from Christian women:
Here’s the truth: your nervous system might be the thing that’s actually keeping you stuck—and no one in Christian circles is really talking about it.
Let’s change that.
God created your body with built-in survival mechanisms. One of the most powerful is your nervous system—it keeps you safe, alerts you to danger, and helps you respond to stress. But when your nervous system stays in survival mode for too long, it gets stuck.
This state is called dysregulation, and it can show up as:
And yes—feeling spiritually stuck, even when you’re doing everything “right.”
For years, I didn’t understand what was happening in my body. I was a single mom building a business, raising two daughters (one with PTSD and the other with ADHD), and trying to be everything for everyone.
The stress never let up.
Eventually, I was diagnosed with three autoimmune diseases and Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV)—all triggered by chronic stress and years of living in a dysregulated state.
My digestion, hormones, adrenals, and immune system were completely out of balance.
And the worst part? I was still trying to fix it with mindset shifts, to-do lists, and more spiritual effort. But what I really needed was to help my body feel safe again.
Let’s talk about what happens when your nervous system stays in survival mode for too long—because this is where things get real.
When your body thinks it’s in danger (even when it’s not), it releases cortisol, your main stress hormone. Cortisol is supposed to help you in short bursts—like slamming on the brakes or running from a threat. But when it stays elevated for too long, it throws off everything.
Here’s what that looks like in real life:
If you’ve ever said, “I’m doing everything right and nothing is working,”—this might be why.
Your body isn’t failing. It’s doing exactly what God designed it to do… it just needs to feel safe again.
So many Christian women say, “I don’t have trauma—I wasn’t in a war.” But friend, trauma isn’t just about what happened. It’s about how your body is responding to what happened.
Let’s talk about 2020.
It was a global traumatic event.
Job losses. Health fears. Division. Gaslighting. Control.
My nervous system—already on high alert from years of survival—recognized that gaslighting instantly. I knew what it felt like. The panic. The shutdown. The deep sense that something was off.
Your nervous system remembers what your mind tries to forget.
That’s why you can’t “think” your way out of chronic stress. You have to regulate.
When your nervous system is dysregulated, intense workouts and strict diets can actually make things worse.
Yes, you read that right.
Your body is already under pressure—adding more stress (even good-intentioned stress) can push it over the edge.
Instead of pushing harder, try moving gently:
These movements help your body release stored tension and reset your nervous system—without flooding it with more cortisol.
And speaking of stress…
Your diet matters more than you think.
Sugar, processed foods, artificial dyes, caffeine, and alcohol can all keep your nervous system on edge.
But foods that are alive—whole, God-made, nutrient-dense—calm your body down.
You don’t need to overhaul your life overnight. Just start simple:
This isn’t about restriction. It’s about restoration.
You might’ve heard people talk about “stimulating the vagus nerve” and wondered, what in the world is that?
The vagus nerve is one of the longest nerves in your body—and it’s a major part of your parasympathetic nervous system (the part that tells your body it’s safe to rest, digest, and heal).
When you gently stimulate the vagus nerve, you help your body move out of fight-or-flight and into peace.
Here are a few simple ways to activate it:
But here’s the warning no one talks about: If your body is very dysregulated, even some of these tools can feel overwhelming at first. That’s okay. Go slow.
Start with what feels nourishing—not triggering.
One breath. One verse. One worship song at a time.
You were never meant to white-knuckle your way through stress or carry burdens that break your body down. That’s not what peace looks like.
So how do you self-regulate your nervous system in a biblical way?
Nap or Rest – Jesus rested. So can you.
Deep Breathing – Try 4-7-8 breathing with prayer
Cold Water – Splash your face or hold an ice cube
Grounding – Get your bare feet on the earth
Stretching (not yoga) – Stretch gently while focusing on gratitude
Declutter a Space – Start small: one drawer, one table
Eat High-Frequency Foods – Think colorful veggies, fruit, and real protein
Quiet + Scripture – Meditate on one verse for 5 minutes
Sunlight – Spend 15 minutes in natural light every morning
Sing or Hum Worship – Activate peace through praise
Here’s what I wish someone would have told me sooner:
You can’t experience peace, clarity, or breakthrough until your nervous system feels safe enough to receive it.
If your body still believes it’s in danger, your thoughts will spiral and your spiritual life will feel like static.
Regulating your nervous system isn’t just self-care. It’s soul-care.
It’s the foundation that allows you to actually hear from God, take action, and experience the peace and clarity you’ve been praying for.
If you’re overthinking, procrastinating, or reacting in ways that make you feel ashamed—stop blaming yourself.
You’re not crazy, lazy, or broken.
