Life has a way of throwing curveballs when we least expect it. In 2020, if you had asked me about being a Life Coach for Christian Women, my answer would have been – “I’m not qualified for that. Besides, I can’t leave my job. I have health insurance and a steady income.” However, after fifteen years in digital marketing, I was laid off from my job. Just like that and like many others that year, I found myself without a job binge-watching The Tiger King and stocking up on toilet paper. But amid the chaos, a question kept bubbling up inside me: “What now, God?”
For fifteen years, my work identity was wrapped up in my career in digital marketing. I thrived in the fast-paced environment, creating campaigns and connecting with clients. But when I was laid off, it felt a little like the rug had been pulled out from under me but I was also excited to see what God was about to do. I knew that when God removes something from your life, it’s not a loss, but instead a transition to receiving something even better. That’s how He works and He is always faithful. Philippians 4:19 says, “And my God will meet all of your needs according to the riches of glory in Christ Jesus.” I was unsure of what the future held but I was sure that God held my future. The days that followed I remained in faith but knew I needed to seek God to see what was next.
I needed clarity, and I knew that clarity would only come from one place. I decided to take time to fast and pray, seeking God’s guidance for my next steps. It was during this period of deep reflection and prayer that God led me to pursue life coaching. This direction felt clear and purposeful. I had already been in the natural health and toxin-free path getting so much healing and relief from using and selling essential oils for over seven years at that point, so I enrolled in a life and health coaching certification program. Health was what I was comfortable with… and confession: I had never heard of a life coach before 2020.
With my certification in hand, I was ready to change lives. However, the reality of building a coaching business from the ground up was more challenging than I anticipated. As my striving increased, my faith decreased. Despite my daily Instagram posts, hours upon hours of classes, investing time and money, getting a coach for myself, and countless late nights, clients were not coming as I had hoped. It felt like I was spinning my wheels, much like Rachel Green in the first season of Friends – naive and feeling a bit entitled. I mean, God called me to this so it must work out, right? Riiiight!?” I was also hopeful that things would just fall into place because they were meant to.
But they didn’t.
By January 2024, my frustration had reached its peak. In a moment of desperation, I cried out to God, “What the heck? Why isn’t this working? YOU called me to this!” His response was unexpected: He asked me to surrender my business to Him. At first, this felt like a punch in the gut. I questioned why He would lead me here only to ask me to let it go. But deep down, I knew that God is good all the time, and He had a plan that was greater than mine.
After some initial resistance, I surrendered my business to God. This act of surrender shifted my perspective entirely. Instead of asking, “What am I doing wrong?” I began to ask, “What is God asking me to do next?” This change in mindset brought about a transformation. God showed me that I had confined myself to a box He never intended for me. I realized that my true calling was to be a life coach for Christian women, not a life and health coach.
Since making this shift, I have experienced a profound sense of clarity and peace. My coaching practice now aligns perfectly with God’s purpose for my life, and I wake up each morning excited to do the work I was meant to do. I no longer feel like I’m spinning my wheels; instead, I feel like I’m moving forward with purpose and confidence.
Looking back, I see that every struggle, every moment of doubt, was part of God’s plan to bring me to where I am today. I’ve learned that trusting God’s timing and surrendering our plans to Him can lead to greater things than we ever imagined. And although I was certainly not equipped to be a life coach for women of faith, I was reminded that no one in the Bible was called who was already equipped. God equips the called, He doesn’t call the equipped. If you’re feeling lost or unsure about your path, I encourage you to seek God’s guidance and trust that He has a plan for you, even if you feel like Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games – unqualified for a calling that will impact a nation. But God.
If you’re a Christian woman feeling lost, stuck, or unsure of your next steps, know that you’re not alone. God has a plan for you, and sometimes it takes surrendering our own plans to find His. I invite you to reflect on your journey and consider how life coaching might help you find clarity and purpose.
