Have you ever felt stuck, trapped by thoughts like “I can’t,” “I’m not enough,” or “I’m too old to change?” If so, you’re not alone. These aren’t just passing thoughts; they are limiting beliefs—deep-seated lies that hold us back from living the abundant life God has for us.
In this episode of my podcast for Christian women Her Unraveled Life, we’re tackling how to overcome limiting beliefs—what they are, where they come from, and most importantly, how to overcome limiting beliefs. As a Christian life coach, I see these struggles all the time, and I want you to know there is hope. You don’t have to stay stuck.
Therefore, if you’re ready to renew your mind, step into God’s promise, and finally break free from the self-doubt that’s been holding you back, keep reading. Plus, I’ll share insights from my book Into the Deep: 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting to help you shift your mindset and walk in faith.
Limiting beliefs are thoughts or assumptions that convince us we can’t do something, even when God says otherwise. These beliefs are often rooted in past experiences, societal expectations, fear, and even spiritual warfare.
Some common examples of limiting beliefs include:
Sound familiar? These thoughts aren’t just negative—they shape our emotions, actions, and ultimately, our results. If we believe we’re not enough, we’ll hesitate to take action, leading to frustration and stagnation.
But here’s the truth: God never called us to live in fear, doubt, or hesitation.
Our limiting beliefs are often formed from:
John 10:10 reminds us, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” The enemy uses limiting beliefs to steal our confidence, kill our dreams, and destroy our purpose. But Jesus came to give us life—abundant, purpose-filled, and free from bondage.
The Bible speaks often about renewing our minds and guarding our thoughts. God knows how powerful our thoughts are and instructs us to take them captive before they take root.
📖 2 Corinthians 10:5 – “We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
📖 Romans 12:2 – “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
📖 Proverbs 23:7 – “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.”
Your thoughts shape your emotions, which drive your actions, and ultimately, determine your outcomes. If we want to see different results in our lives, we must first change the way we think.
Start by paying attention to your thoughts. What negative beliefs do you find yourself repeating? Write them down. Then, challenge them by asking:
For Example: If your belief is “I’m not qualified to do what God has called me to do,” replace it with truth— “God equips the called” (Hebrews 13:21).
Once you’ve identified a limiting belief, replace it with a Biblical affirmation. Here are some examples:
Write these truths down, post them somewhere visible, and speak them out loud daily.
When a limiting belief pops up, stop and take it captive (2 Corinthians 10:5). Ask God to replace your fears with faith. Surrender control to Him and trust that He will equip you for what He has called you to.
“Father, I surrender every fear, every doubt, and every thought that is not from You. Renew my mind and help me to see myself through Your eyes. Strengthen me to walk boldly in my calling and reject every lie of the enemy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Overcoming limiting beliefs isn’t just about thinking more positively. Certainly, it’s about aligning our thoughts with God’s truth so we can step boldly into the calling He has placed on our lives.
