In this final post of our rest series, we’ll dive deeper into what the Bible says about rest. This is a topic that could easily be a ten-part sermon, but today, I’ll share what the Lord has put on my heart.
One of my favorite verses is Psalm 46:11: “Be still and know that I am God.” It’s a great reminder to put our trust in God. When life feels overwhelming, remember to be still and know that He is God. Trust in His faithfulness, goodness, grace, love, mercy, and character.
Matthew 11:28-29 is another comforting verse: “Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” When you are weary, turn to Him and find rest for your soul.
Philippians 4:6-8 guides us on how to achieve inner peace: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” This peace surpasses all understanding and guards our hearts and minds.
Recently, God placed a profound message on my heart about rest, rooted in Hebrews chapter 4. Hebrews, likely written by Paul, was a letter addressed to the Jewish people—individuals deeply familiar with the old covenant, as it was an integral part of their identity. Hebrews often quotes Deuteronomy, 2 Samuel, and several Psalms to contrast the old covenant with the new covenant brought to us through Jesus. It’s like Act 2 of a play, where Act 1 unfolds in the Old Testament.
Chapter 4 of Hebrews begins with “Therefore,” signaling the need to refer back to the previous chapter for context. Chapter 3 ends with a discussion about unbelief, referencing the Israelites and Moses, who were prohibited from entering the promised land due to their lack of faith. Psalm 95 equates the Promised Land with God’s rest, stating, “They shall never enter my rest.” Here, rest signifies freedom from slavery and oppression. However, Hebrews 4:1 assures us that the promise of entering God’s rest still stands for those who believe.
The author elaborates in verse 2, stating, “For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed.” Verse 3 continues, “Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said.”
Hebrews 3 and 4 emphasize that rest equals belief, while unrest equals unbelief. You cannot enter into God’s rest without belief. Exodus 33:14 reinforces this, stating, “The Lord replied, ‘My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.’”
To truly grasp this, we must consider the Israelites’ lives when God promised them rest. They had just fled slavery and were enduring the harsh conditions of the wilderness, even longing to return to slavery due to their discomfort. After Moses died, Joshua led the nation into the Promised Land. The men and boys had to be circumcised and remain in this foreign land, surrounded by armies until they healed. They then had to fight for the land God promised them, without a proper army, weapons, training, or full understanding of the challenges ahead. They would face giants once they reached Canaan. Rest, therefore, is found in trusting God, believing He is who He says He is, and remaining in His presence, despite the difficult circumstances of life.
In Genesis and Exodus, we see that disobedience and unbelief prevented people from entering or staying in God’s rest. Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden due to disobedience, and the Israelites were barred from the Promised Land because of their unbelief and disobedience. However, Hebrews assures us that the promise of rest remains available to those who believe.
So what does scripture say about rest? It says that you can enter into God’s rest simply by believing.
Remember, God’s rest, or what the Bible says about rest is not a time of relaxation but a state where He rules and manages His creation free from chaos and disorder. Trust in Him, believe in His promises, and remain in His presence. Despite life’s difficulties, you can find rest in trusting God and believing that He is who He says He is.
