Ever feel like you’re walking through a season of fog and silence from God, especially about your calling? It’s as though His voice, once a clear guide, has become a distant echo, and the vision He gave you blurs into uncertainty. In these moments, we might feel lost, abandoned. But remember, He is closer than ever, preparing you for something greater.
A profound truth to hold onto during these times is this, your calling and life message are often found in the area of your biggest struggle. What feels like being buried in doubts and trials is often God’s way of planting us for growth. But to us, we’re still in the dark, covered in dirt, and that feels pretty dang scary and lonely.

If that’s you right now, I want you to hear this before we go one word further. You have not lost Him. You have not disqualified yourself. And you are not the only woman sitting in this fog wondering if she missed something.
Let me tell you about the season that taught me this the hard way.
A few years back, I was in the clearest, most connected season with God I had ever known. Daily time in the Word. Journaling every morning. Fasting, praying, listening, and actually hearing. I felt sure of my calling for the first time in a long time.
Then life came in sideways.
My health took a hit that knocked me flat. We lost a pet suddenly and unexpectedly – he was only 11 months old. It broke something in me. And right in the middle of all that grief and exhaustion, it felt like every spiritual attack I had ever fought off decided to show back up at once.
And just like that, I couldn’t hear Him anymore.
I would sit down to pray and feel nothing. I would open Scripture and stare at the page. Every single morning I woke up in a mental haze I couldn’t shake. So I started asking the questions you’re probably asking right now. Did I hear God wrong about my calling? Did I do something to push Him away? Is He even still speaking?
Here’s what I know now that I couldn’t see then. God had not moved an inch. I was simply overwhelmed, in my body, my mind, my emotions, and my spirit, all at once. And an overwhelmed nervous system will make even the loudest voice sound like static.
The enemy loves that static. He filled mine with lies like:
“You heard God wrong.” “You’re not really called.” “You’re failing.” “God backed away from you.”
None of it was true. I wasn’t defective. I wasn’t disobedient. I was buried under stress and grief, and I needed help finding my way back to a place where I could hear God clearly again.
If you’re in that place too, I want to walk you through the exact steps that brought me out of it.
These aren’t theories I read somewhere. They’re the steps I lived, and the same ones I walk my coaching clients through when they come to me feeling stuck, foggy, and unsure of what God is doing.
Before you ask God for something new, check whether you’ve obeyed the last thing He already said. Silence is often less about new revelation and more about waiting on you.
Ask yourself honestly, what was the last clear thing He told me to do? Have I actually done it?
This one surprises people, but it’s true. You cannot discern clearly when your nervous system thinks it’s under attack. Stress creates static. Peace creates clarity.
Before you demand a fresh word from heaven, take a walk. Breathe. Sleep. Sometimes your breakthrough starts in your body before it ever reaches your spirit.
When your mind says “God is far from me,” that thought is not automatically true just because it’s loud.
“We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5, NIV)
Trade the lie for the truth on purpose, every single time it shows up. This is a discipline, not a one-time decision.
Scripture. Worship. Prayer. Journaling.
When we feel stuck, we tend to complicate things: more books, more podcasts, more noise. But clarity usually isn’t found in something new. It’s found in the simple practices you already know but haven’t been doing consistently.
Sometimes the fog isn’t just emotional or mental; it’s a battle. Confusion is one of the enemy’s favorite weapons because it keeps you paralyzed.
Pray out loud. Speak truth over your mind. Renounce the specific lies you’ve been believing by name. Silence the noise on purpose instead of just enduring it.
Instead of asking “God, where are You,” try asking “God, what are You forming in me right now?”
That shift changes everything. Silence in Scripture was rarely punishment. It was almost always preparation.
Seeds don’t grow in the light. They grow in the dark, covered, hidden, quiet, doing work no one can see yet.
“Unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.” (John 12:24, NIV)
That season that feels like burial might actually be the one growing your deepest roots.

If you’re staring at that list feeling like your mind is too loud to even try step one, start with my free 3-Day Thought Detox. It’s a simple, guided reset to help you quiet the noise so you can actually hear again. Grab it here.
If you’re in a fog right now, I need you to hear this clearly. You are not behind schedule; you did not miss your calling. And you did not hear God wrong.
In the quiet, in the loneliness, in the heart of your struggle, there is a purpose. God is at work, shaping and fortifying you. Close your eyes for a second and feel His presence, His peace. He’s right there with you, whispering that everything will be okay.
These challenging times are not signs of His absence, they’re periods of preparation. His grace and His joy are your strength, His promise to never leave you is your foundation.
Embrace this season as a time of being planted and nurtured by His faithful hands. Your struggles are not just obstacles, they’re the soil from which your calling and life message will bloom.
He is forming you. Rooting you. Preparing you for something you can’t fully see yet.
You are not buried, friend. You are being planted. Hold onto that promise, feel His unwavering presence, and trust in the incredible journey He is preparing you for.
If you’re ready to stop guessing and actually walk through this season with someone who’s been exactly where you are, that’s what I do inside 1:1 coaching. Together we’ll clear the mental clutter, name what’s really going on, and get you moving again with clarity and confidence. Book your Next Step Breakthrough Call here.
How do I hear God’s voice when I feel like He’s silent? Start by checking your obedience to the last thing He told you, calming an overwhelmed nervous system, and returning to simple practices like Scripture and prayer. Silence often signals preparation, not absence.
Why can’t I hear God anymore? Overwhelm, stress, grief, and spiritual attack can all create mental and emotional static that makes it harder to discern God’s voice, even though He hasn’t gone anywhere.
What does it mean when God is silent? In Scripture, seasons of silence are often seasons of growth and preparation rather than punishment. God may be forming something in you that requires quiet before it’s revealed.
How long does a season of spiritual silence usually last? There’s no set timeline. What matters most is what you do during the silence, staying obedient, taking thoughts captive, and returning to the basics, rather than how long the season lasts.
Can stress and overwhelm affect my ability to hear from God? Yes. A dysregulated nervous system makes it difficult to discern spiritually. Calming your body is often a necessary first step toward hearing clearly again.
