The Importance of Rest: Why Your Body, Mind, and Spirit Need It
When was the last time you truly rested? Not just a quick nap, not just zoning out on your phone—but real, deep, soul-refreshing rest? If you’re struggling to remember, you’re not alone. In today’s culture, busyness is glorified while rest is often seen as a luxury. But the truth is, rest isn’t optional—it’s essential for your physical, emotional, and spiritual health. Today we are talking about the importance of rest.
In the latest episode of Her Unraveled Life, a Christian podcast for women, we’re diving into the importance of rest and how embracing it can transform your well-being. If you love learning through audio, you can listen to the full episode now on Apple or below on Spotify.
Why Rest Matters More Than You Think
We often think of rest as simply “taking a break,” but true rest goes so much deeper. It’s not just about stopping—it’s about restoring. When you allow yourself to rest, you:
Recharge your energy – Your body needs time to heal and recover.
Gain clarity and creativity – A rested mind is more productive than a burnt-out one.
Strengthen your faith – Stillness allows you to hear God more clearly.
Boost your immune system – Chronic stress and exhaustion weaken your body’s ability to fight off illness.
Regulate your emotions – Without rest, anxiety, stress, and frustration take over.
When you skip rest, you’re not just losing sleep—you’re sacrificing your peace, your health, and your ability to show up fully in your calling.
The 7 Types of Rest You Need
Most people think rest only means sleep, but according to Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith, there are seven types of rest we all need:
Physical Rest – Sleep, stretching, and recovery activities.
Mental Rest – Taking breaks from constant thinking and decision-making.
Emotional Rest – Setting boundaries and allowing yourself to process emotions.
Social Rest – Choosing to be around life-giving people instead of draining relationships.
Sensory Rest – Limiting screen time and reducing overstimulation.
Creative Rest – Stepping away from work to replenish inspiration and creativity.
Spiritual Rest – Spending quiet time with God, meditating on His word, and trusting in His plan.
I’m covering each of these types of rest in a full series, so make sure to check out the rest of the blogs and podcast episodes where I go deeper into how to incorporate these into your life.
